Spent three afternoons constructing a new ramp to the wheelchair accessible swing on the Fairfield East Elementary playground.  The original ramp was no longer useable due to warped and damaged floor boards.  The scouts and their adult helpers removed the old floor boards, shoveled gravel to expose the existing frame, reinforced the frame, cut 54 new floor boards and installed the new floor.  Fellow classmates requiring wheelchairs can again use their playground swing on a nice day.  Check out pictures of the Pack working on their project. Built two bridges for the Izaak Walton League in Hamilton along their bird watching trail.  Both bridges have ramp access and safety handrails and are wide enough to accompany a very heavy load.  The excavation of the holes in the hard ground and bedrock necessitated many extra hours of work for the teams directed by Michael over four weekends and many other weekdays.  The pressure-treated lumber and firm base will assure a long-lasting service project benefiting the community, area hikers, and birdwatchers. Prepared urban survival kits assembled from 7,000 items collected for homeless children, considered by some to be the neediest kids of all.  The kits are filled with items that will prepare youth for living on the streets.  Items include a toothbrush, toothpaste, a blanket, non-perishable foods, a flashlight, batteries, socks, can opener, sunscreen, hat, gloves, plastic utensils, deodorant, razors, shaving cream, shampoo, soap, feminine hygiene products, Q-Tips, safety pins, a poncho and rubber bands/hair ties.  The troop went door-to-door on a neighborhood drive in West Chester, passing out 2,000 flyers and also contacted a number of local businesses.  The troop donated the kits to the Anthony House in Corryville (operated by the Lighthouse Youth Services), which provides a safe haven for youth up to age 26 with housing problems. Gathered native rocks and built a low wall around the foundation of the “Gregory Log Cabin” at the Dudley Woods Park in Liberty Twp., part of the Metro Parks of Butler County.  This formed a planter which was filled with native plants typical of the log cabin’s era: circa 1800.  Also rebuilt the stone pathway to the cabin and landscaped the bedding area at the permanent sign for the cabin.  The project was finished by erecting a split rail fence around this area which matched some of the park’s existing fencing.  Check out the photo. Pack 942 collected and compiled recipes to publish a cook book titled "A Taste of Freedom, Recipe for Hungry Patriots." The Pack then sold the book at $10 each and gave $3,500 of the money earned to the Veteran of Foreign Wars Post #7696. This enabled the Post to continue to send care packages to our brave soldiers serving loyally overseas to protect our freedom and bring democracy to deprived areas of the world. Sprinkled throughout the book are quotes from the Scouts stating what they like about Scouting and reflecting the strong values of the Scouting program. Common themes included family relationships, friendships, camp, and learning about the world. March 23,2005 Pack 942

Completely indexed and bar coded a 1,700-book library at St. Julie Billiart School in Hamilton and placed the cataloged books on shelves.  Since the school does not have a full-time librarian, this automation process now allows book tracking and checking in/out in a more easily manageable process using the SMARTERM software and a SWOCA (Southwest Ohio Computer Association) server.  Mr. Shaver successfully led this time-consuming project to its completion in about 6 months, working most weekends when his unit, Troop 956, was not on an outdoor activity or camping.  This project will continue to benefit the students at St. Julie's for years to come. Initiated and organized a competition robotics team program for Union Elementary School in West Chester.  This included recruiting team leaders, adults, corporate sponsorship, and helping in the selection of student team members.

The team then met biweekly to design, build, and program a Lego robot to compete with other school groups in performing specific problem tasks.  The school program is intended to be self-sustaining.  This initial team was reorganized this year at Hopewell Jr. School so, in essence, two different programs resulted from Mr. Helmer’s project.

As a note, his team placed very high in the district and therefore qualified for state competition where they finished 8th out of approximately 100 teams in Ohio.  This is an incredible accomplishment for a “rookie” team.
