I went to the hills in the Dominican Republic to build
houses for the very poor. This is a volunteer effort sponsored
by The Village Mountain Mission Project, which gives Boy Scout and
Venture units a low-cost opportunity to have a High Adventure outing
and that provides service to mankind while encouraging a life-changing
exposure to another culture. I am now the assistant program
manager.
This was the first year of the project (we learned how
to do this). We completed one house and part of another.
The houses are simple: concrete block, thatched roof, and dirt floor,
but it is a giant step-up from what is currently available.
The schedule is a series of over-lapping 9-day
adventures. Living conditions are primitive and all food is
provided by the locals (no fast-food). We do everything needed
to build the houses (except the thatched roof), but participants still
get to have fun: camping on the beach, swimming on the reef, hiking,
horseback riding, and seeing some memorable sights. The project
is scheduling groups for 2005 and 2006. For more information,
contact Charlie Garrison, (513) 942-8943.
